Week 31 Swimming and Honey Bees :)

This week I had some fun. I went swimming in a big deep pool under a waterfall. O and I photographed it too. Which was difficult because it was evening and the best view of the fall was from the east. I would like to go back their in the morning if I can manage to get myself out of bed early enough. I did however like the way the sun backlight the cedar tree making it glow and if I blocked the sun with the tree trunk the glare went away. I also had the delightful experience of watching my parents jar up the almost five gallons of fresh honey our bees managed to make. We have tried having bees many times over many years but they always dies over our long cold winter. This time we worked harder and fed them pounds and pounds of sugar water in the fall to help them get settled and it worked. They made it through the winter intact and were even able to produce surplus honey for our consumption. And let me tell you how good that honey tasted freshly extracted from the cones it was spectacular and so much more that we had hoped for, that they would live and pollenate our garden. Finally the last few photographs are of the big work party this weekend at a friends house, or should I say soon to be built house, that is what we were working on. I guess from what people keep telling me it is kind-of an odd thing to have a work party and actually have people come of their own free will to work. But for Finland MN that is a norm. The main task was leveling the foundation and pulling nails from a pile of salvaged wood.

Week 50 Snow

This week I had some fun homework assignments photographed some playing Xbox and exploring in the snow.

Week 11 Flowers

This week since there were so many flowers blooming I decided I should have my photograph of the week be of a flower. I was fortunate enough that a storm blew threw and then was followed by some lightly overcast hours. It made for a great time to photograph. There were water droplets on all the flowers and the light was nice and diffused but still bright. The photograph above is my favorite this week because of the stark contrast between the bright yellow and the dark green. I also like ho the plane of focus puts the tip of the inner part of the flower, the water droplets on the petal, and a line of green leaves in focus. I made a hug amount of photographs in a very short time largely because I was using extension tubes on my 50mm prime lens without a tripod and with some wind blowing things around. It is incredibly hard to focus with the extension tubes because I have to move the camera instead of just turning a ring on the lens. I dod manage to cope with fast shutter speeds and lot…

Week 48 Winter Boat Race

Well what do you do in the middle of winter in Minnesota. Other than fish on the frozen lakes you have  duct tape boat races. I hade a very hard time reducing the many hundreds of photographs I made of these event but have included only the best here.
