Well this isn't actually a castle but doesn't it kinda look like one. I think this is my most successful HDR, High Dynamic Range, photograph to date. I made a series of almost a dozen photographs all with slightly different exposures and then merged them with software enabling there to be details in the dark shadowy arch and the bright sky. This is actually a memorial student union and through the arch you can see the old capital that is now also part of the college. both of these buildings are among the most notable features of Columbia. The HDR is my photo of the week but I also made some other nice ones on that photo walk. Doesn't it look like a castle a little? it was a perfect day for photography with some light stringy clouds, a setting sun and a deep blue sky. I also finally remembered to put my polarizer filter on which helped deepen the blue and saturate the golden sunset. I wish I had remembered earlier in the photo walk.
For the year 2012 I am doing a project where every week I take on self assignment. The idea is to practice and improve my photography skills by having an image in my mind and then trying to make a photograph of that, or in a more documentary style trying to tell a story about something. I predict that the true evolution of this project will make itself clear in time but the main idea is to constantly be exploring my photography.
